Project name: Youth & Leadership Skills Development

Project summary

The Prince George Métis Community Association’s Youth Group is a Youth driven and Youth focused group that promotes Métis history and culture. The youth group aims to continue to educate Métis youth and enable them to lead other Aboriginal youth in the community by being strong peer role models. By the end of the project the Youth group will have developed into a functioning committee that possesses the skills necessary to effectively lead other Youth. This project will result in a youth-driven action plan that continues to address issues indentified by Métis youth.

Project name: Celebrating our Culture
Sponsor: Carrier Sekani Tribal Council
Priority Area: Elder Care

Project summary

Carrier Sekani Tribal Council seeks to work with the Yinka Dene Elders to bring culture, language, and traditions to children, youth, students and aboriginal families living in the Prince George area. Carrier Sekani Tribal council seeks to work with trained elders to provide services (workshops, outings, and other hands-on tasks) to families, youth, students and others (teachers, schools, youth drop-in facilities). This project will employ the current program coordinator and train twelve elders who are ready to share their learning with others throughout the region. From the previous culture camp held, the elders have identified three key areas to focus on: youth, infants & parents and aboriginal families. They will focus on hosting two feasts in the community, birch bark harvesting & root picking and three language camps.

Project name: Walk Tall Annual Youth Conference

Project summary

The annual Youth Achievement Awards was established in 2008, and acknowledges youth who exhibit high standards of excellence, dedication, leadership and accomplishments in the following areas: academic, athletic, artistic, cultural, community/volunteer, business/entrepreneurial, personal achievement and traditional knowledge/practicing of Aboriginal Culture. The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council selection process is unique in that recipients are chosen by committees consisting of Aboriginal youth from the community.

Project name: Healing our Elders
Sponsor: Prince George Aboriginal Business Development Association
Priority Area: Elder Care

Project summary

This project will bring elders (Dakelh, Métis & Lheidli) together for the sole purpose of working on supporting one another. The project will be a two stage process: the first stage will bring Elders together in a safe environment where a facilitated healing process can be undertaken. This will be done through a three day “healing” process proposed to be undertaken at PGNFC Camp Friendship. The second stage will bring a larger group of Elders as well as other interested Elders in Prince George together in a two day facilitated session (An “open space” forum in late November or early December) where they can begin to identify common objectives that Elders could work together on for the betterment of the entire community.

Project name: Teaching & Promoting the Mitchif Language

Project summary

The objective of this project is to teach, promote and revitalize the Mitchif language in Prince George by means of community based instructional sessions. PG Métis Elders Society would like to provide language training to three grjoups (20 per group) as part of a revitalization project. Groups would be broken out by age: Group 1, 5-9, Group 2, 10-15 and Group 3, youth to adult.

Project name: Bridging to Employment
Sponsor: Carrier Sekani Family Services

Project summary

The Bridging Program provides clients with the first step in building the confidence and skills to promote job readiness for individuals that are supported through this program to deal with barriers and issues related to education, employment and personal development. Students are taught daily living strategies to create a routine for success. The program is intended to serve aboriginal men, women and youth who are struggling with communication skills, budgeting, low levels of education, limited certification in training and employment.

The primary components of this project are to first enhance and strengthen personal development, self-esteem and daily living skills. Participants will then build off of this foundation towards increasing and strengthening of employability, education and training.

Training is thirteen weeks in duration with a minimum of 12 participants per intake.

Project name: Fire Pit – Cultural HIV/AIDS Prevention Program
Sponsor: Positive Living North

Project summary

The project will provide support for an Elder, Nutrition and Support Staff to deliver services at the Fire Pit Cultural Drop in Centre which provides HIV/AIDS/HCV prevention services within a culturally healing framework. Clients receive support, resource and referral, education and connection to related services within the community.

Project name: Working with our Elders for Cultural Integration
Sponsor: Central Interior Native Health Society
Priority Area: Elders & Health and Wellness

Project summary

The objective of the project is to have ongoing cultural guidance from Elders to inform the practices of the Central Interior Native Health Society (CINHS). CINHS will hire an Elder(s) to provide their wisdom to the organization and clients accessing the center. The Elder(s) will participate in weekly clinical meetings, semi-annual board and staff retreats, weekly team meetings and oversee the implementation of an Aboriginal Staff Caucus within the organization.

Project name: OPTIONS – Restorative Justice for Youth
Sponsor: Urban Aboriginal Justice Society

Project summary

This program will teach school staff, students, families and community members how to use the principles of Restorative Justice and traditional Aboriginal approaches to resolve conflict in a culturally appropriate manner. The purpose is to increase the chance of Aboriginal students remaining in school and completing their education by providing them with a holistic, inclusive and healing approach to school community conflict instead of the more familiar “punishment” model.

Project name: Aboriginal Construction Program
Sponsor: Prince George Native Friendship Center
Priority Area: Trades Training

Project summary

The initiative is designed to prepare Aboriginal Youth for employment opportunities in the construction industry, by offering industry required construction safety training and certification, that will prepare them to gain employment in the construction fields. The development and implementation of this project will prepare Aboriginal people for the general labour positions, as well apprenticeship opportunities. The “Aboriginal Construction Program” (ACP) is an innovative approach to assist individuals to prepare for a future in the construction trades. Participants will have the opportunity to prepare themselves for their identified trades goal by participating in a comprehensive assessment, as well as receiving industry required soft skills, construction site safety and certification and employment opportunities via a job coach.
